Recently things have improved in the NHS and you can only work so many hours / week and so many hours in a row.
However, I remember a few years ago being a junior doctor and working 13 day runs, including several days which were >12 hours.
That was quite hard (not sure I could do that now!)

In a day? 24, although thankfully that’s now illegal; single shifts in hospital are limited to 13 hours at a time. For a consultation it’s as long as needed- some really difficult issues just need more time but it will be time well spent.

When I stared working it was at a time we did crazy hours as a doctor. I loved in the hospital and was on call every other day. The most hours in one shift was from 9am Friday morning to 5pm Monday night with no sleep and very little food. Thank goodness the nurses were kind and that junior doctors no longer have to work that way. It’s very different now.

As Jo & Lucy mentioned, the numbers of hours doctors can work a week has been cut down which helps! On my week on the labour ward, I did four 12 hours shifts with the midwifes (some of them were night shifts). Although they were tiring, it was a great experience.

The most I’ve ever worked in a week is 72 hours as I had swapped shifts. But there are many more safeguards in place now to stop us working too many hours to keep us sane and our patients safe!
